Space honored by state VFW

WANTAGE — Assemblyman Parker Space, R-Sussex, Warren, Morris was honored on Feb. 17 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of New Jersey, with its Legislator of the Year Award.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the VFW and all the veterans and families they represent,” Space said.
Bill Thomson, the Legislative Director for the VFW in New Jersey, extended his congratulations and praise of Space.
“Assemblyman Space has always been a great supporter of New Jersey veterans and those currently serving in the military,” stated Thomson. “His legislative record on our issues as well as his deep personal concern to veterans and military families speaks volumes.”
Space has been a champion of veterans and military issues as an Assemblyman and has seen the enactment of many of his pro-veteran and pro-military legislation including a resolution supporting the establishment of a federal Department of Veterans Affairs community-based clinic in Sussex County; allowing for taxpayer contributions to the building of the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery; the allowing of shared services between military bases and local governments; making it easier for veterans to obtain county identification cards; and motorcycle license plates for veterans, to name a few.
In 2015, Assemblyman Space was one of the highest rated Republicans by the VFW; in 2017 he earned the highest rating on veterans’ issues in the entire legislature.
In the new legislative session, Assemblyman Space has prime sponsored legislation to designate High Point State Park as High Point Veterans' State Park; allows veteran to establish veterans' preference retroactively for civil service employment list; establishes a task force to study issues facing returning members of the United States Armed Forces and New Jersey National Guard and make recommendations on how State should address issues; and establishes special license plates for honorably discharged veterans.
In addition, Assemblyman Space will be introducing legislation exempting re-enlistment bonuses from the State income tax and legislation which protects the civil service eligibility for prospective professional firefighters on active duty in the NJ National Guard or reserves.
“Through legislative advocacy and with the constituent services that my office along with Senator Oroho and Assemblyman Wirths provide, I look forward to continue working with the VFW and with veterans and their families,” said Space.
