‘These kids would never be grown’

So let’s start with Florida, not the town, the state,
It was known as a place where you could sit back, relax, and concentrate.
But on February 14th, 2018,
Things turned from beachy and bright, to a blood covered scene.
he had a gun, an AR-15 to make things specific,
bringing terror and havoc, making things all too horrific.
the Left ran out of the buildings, crying and screaming,
whilst at the same time, just hoping, wishing, that they were all just dreaming.
the news reporters arrived, interviewing these kids,
who only spoke, about seeing their classmates dead, and their closed eyelids.
covered in blood, the death toll unknown,
but one thing we all knew, sadly, was that these kids would never be grown.
17 lives silenced and lost,
for we allowed these guns, and our kids were the cost.
what we ask, please, is we get some control,
so we won’t have to pay this heinous and costly toll.
these kids, from douglas, are the future generation,
that will stop us from fearing to get our academic education.

The writer is an 8th grader in the Warwick Valley Middle School who included the following with her submission: “I have feared gun violence for a very long time, but this event has completely shone so much light on how much things need to be fixed. After this tragic event in Parkland, Florida, I decided to write a poem. I’m not a professional writer, but I just needed to write something to express my feelings about this tragic event. I feel that if this could get publicized it could change the ways people see gun violence, and change a lot of things in society today. Thank you for your time.”
