SANDYSTON — The YMCA of Newark & Vicinityand national girls self-esteem movement leader Girls World Expo are joining forces to create Girl Aspire, a five-day, girls-only sleepaway camp that is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Open to girls 10-14 years of age, Girl Aspire will take place August 19-23 at Camp Linwood MacDonald in Sandyston, with its 200+ acres of pristine forests, fields, waterways and ponds.
“These five days will be truly transformational for those who attend,” said Cherie Hammond, Director of Camp Linwood MacDonald. “We’re going to do it all, from exuberant exercise to introspective reflection. This will be an opportunity for these young women to know and grow as they explore leadership, health and wellness, relationships and friendships, and identity development – all in an inspiring natural setting.”
“We’re pleased to have an opportunity to join with the YMCA of Newark to create Girl Aspire,” said Girls World Expo CEO Varinda Missett. “In producing one-day Girls World Expo events around the country, we’ve repeatedly heard from girls and their parents about the need for young tweens and teens to have a more extended chance to create communities, share experiences, and become powerful and empowered leaders. Girl Aspire is that opportunity.”
The five-day camp will include workshops and speakers from the business and civic worlds, authors and speakers on topics of contemporary concern such as setting limits and building boundaries, and plenty of opportunity for some awesome fun.
“A day at Girl Aspire could include everything from yoga and fishing to self-defense and developing leadership skills,” said Hammond.
“Girl Aspire will use the concept of community to build trust, establish connections, and empower girls to be authentically engaged,” said Missett. “Girl Aspire is specifically designed to provide new experiences for girls, from learning new personal, social, and leadership skills to participating in empowering activities. Campers will discover their potential this summer in the beautiful woods of New Jersey."
Tuition for Girl Aspire is $899 which includes all activities and meals for the full session. Limited scholarship funding available. Arrival will be after 3pm on Sunday, Aug. 19, with departure at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. Registration opens Feb. 19, and can be completed online at newarkymca.org/linwoodmacdonald or by calling 973-948-7090.
