Vernon introduces budget

After an extended break, the Vernon Town Council reconvened on Monday night to introduce of the 2018 municipal budget.
“Our community really came together with compassion and care for one another,” Mayor Harry Shortway stated Monday night in reference to the debilitating Nor’easter that slammed the area last week.
The sentiment was shared by the entire council by thanking the work of the DPW, emergency services, and the Vernon Board of Education for their efforts in assisting residents in need.
Vernon CFO Elke Yetter gave a short presentation on the proposed 2018 municipal budget. The municipal portion of the budget is one of three components that will determine the property tax burden on residents (the other two portions being the school and county taxes).
The total proposed municipal budget for 2018 is $25,338,858.
The amount to be raised by taxation comes in at $16,882,134.
With the average residential home in Vernon assessed at a value of $214,160, and the municipal tax rate being $0.65 per $100, the proposed 2018 annual municipal tax on the average home is $1,392.
A public hearing and vote on the full, proposed budget is scheduled to be held on Monday, April .
Shortway began the meeting by issuing a proclamation recognizing two brothers from Vernon who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Robert and Mark Reilly of Vernon Boy Scout troop 404 were both honored Monday night for reaching the level of Eagle Scout after completing their community projects.
Robert Reilly, 18, graduated from Vernon High School in 2017, and is a student at Sussex County Community College. For his project, Reilly planned and constructed a raised stoned planter around the sign of the Lady of Fatima Church in Highland Lakes.
Mark Reilly, 16, is a Junior at Vernon High School, and a member of the “Order of Arrow” honor society. For his project, Reilly built a storage shed for the Lady of Fatima Church.
To conclude Monday nights town council meeting, Mayor Shortway invited residents to join the Greenway Action Advisory Committee for a trail tour of the town center trail and to learn more about the Vernon Greenway Project on Sunday, March 18 at 10:00AM at the base of Black Creek Drive.
