For over 16 years, the McAfee Post Office in Vernon has generously offered its lobby display as a showcase for Vernon students’ “stamp design” artwork.
This year, Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” masterpiece served as the inspiration for the elementary school art lesson, through the direction of Vernon Township School District Art Teacher Joanne Portner. Rolling Hills Primary School students illustrated their stamps using colored pencils and learned how to create light and dark values by varying the amount of pressure exerted upon these artistic instruments. Noticing how the church steeple within Van Gogh’s painting closely resembles that of certain churches within the Vernon community, the students added this structure to the buildings drawn within their own art and used curved lines to portray their personal rendition of “Starry Night.”
