Governor creating a welfare state

| 01 May 2018 | 01:42

Our new Democrat governor is obvsiouly working ot make New Jersey into a socialist welfare state; thus buying all the votes that he can.
He's pushing for universal preschool and free college tuition. How many millions or billions of dollars will this add to New Jersey's already astronomical tax burden? Another hit on the middle class. Should we accept Texas Gov. Gregg Abbot's kind invitation? Will the last taxpayer leaving New Jersey please turn out the lights?
But doesn't article VIII, Section IV, paragraph 1 of the New Jersey state constitution read: "The Legislature shall provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of free public schools for the instruction of all the children in the state between the ages of five and 18 ears.
Shouldn't Gov. Murphy's proposals require that us citizens/voters first approve an amendment to the state's constitution?
If the Legislature does move to amend the state conversation, I would propose they amend "all the children in the state" to read "all the children who are citizens or legal residents in the state" and leave the age bracket as it is.
