VERNON — Unusual weather with snow in the upper areas of Vernon created a day that honored one very special lady — Highland Lakes resident Barbara Fimia. About 120 Vernon seniors, town, county and state officials gathered at the Crystal Springs Clubhouse on April 30 to celebrate the annual selection of Vernon Senior of the Year.
Senior Center Director Jane Damstra described the 2018 winner as the ultimate community volunteer who is a longtime Vernon Township Woman’s Club member.
“She knits helmet caps for soldiers, items for newborns, the ill and elderly. Our winner also volunteers with DASI and Birth Haven,” revealed Damstra.
Announcing Fimia’s name as the 2018 Vernon Senior of the Year, Damstra personalized Fimia as having five siblings, an avid gardener, a lifelong skier, skiing Colorado and the Alps and a lover of costume parties having once dressed as Phyllis Diller and delivering a Diller type comedy monologue.
Fimia graciously accepted her award and bouquet of flowers from Hal Wirths and Mayor Harry Shortway.
“Senior citizens are a wonderful resource and such a benefit to Vernon Township,” said Mayor Shortway.
