Wantage teen makes Eagle Scout

WANTAGE — David Patrick Mitchell, 18, of Wantage, Vernon Troop 283, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank of the Boys Scouts of America. David is the son of David and Patricia Mitchell.
In order to achieve the Eagle Scout rank, a scout must complete the 7 Boy Scout ranks, earn at least 21 merit badges including 11 Eagle required merit badges, hold leadership in the troop and most importantly plan and execute an Eagle Scout Service Project.
Mitchell earned a total of 31 merit badges and the Gold Palm. For his Eagle Scout project, David built two hunting blinds for the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. The hunting blinds are handicap accessible and are built specifically for veterans, women and children. His project took four months and over 300 hours to complete.
During his four years at High Point Regional High School, Mitchell, who will graduate this June, has been involved with Freshman Wrestling Team, Varsity Swim Team and the Varsity Track and Field Team. He has also been involved with the Sussex County YMCA Swim Team for twelve years. In the fall, David plans to attend Sussex County Community College majoring in Environmental Science and in two years transfer to Paul Smith’s College, where he will continue his four year degree.
