Centenary Stage Company’s education program brings two summer acting programs to Hackettstown — the Young Performers Workshop and the TYRO Acting Program. The critically acclaimed Young Performers Workshop will be holding Summer Session interviews by appointment on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3.
Led by theatre, TV and film veteran Michael Blevins, the critically acclaimed Young Performers Workshop is a musical theatre program under the auspices of the professionally producing Centenary Stage Company in residence on the campus of Centenary University.
The Young Performers Workshop is dedicated to the enrichment of young lives through the use of theatre arts and serves as a greenhouse for cultivating young theatre performers. As one of only a handful of youth theatre programs in the nation to offer both a formal theater arts education alongside practical production experience, the YPW Summer Session runs 5 weeks from July 9 through August 12 and culminates in a two-week Festival of Shows featuring the production of American musical classics and plays. The session meets Monday through Friday with classes meeting by section between the hours of 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
After classes, students rehearse productions to be performed in the YPW Summer Festival of Shows. Registration is open to students 8– 18 and no prior experience is required however all new applicants must complete an interview with program director Michael Blevins. The program is designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate and advance young performers. Tuition for the Young Performers Workshop is $995. Registration deadline is June 27, 2018
As part of the Centenary Stage Company’s mission to introduce and develop arts in education within the community, TYRO I and II Acting Program is a two-week theatre arts program designed specifically for young thespians ages 6—11 years of age. The program runs from July 9 to July 20. Using structured theatre activities which focus on expression, confidence building and fun, young thespians will learn acting games and demonstrate improvisations inspired by fairy tales and folk tales. TYRO I is designed specifically for ages 6 - 8 and meets from 9:30 a.m. until noon and TYRO II is designed for ages 9–11 and meets from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Both sections meet Monday through Friday during the two week session. The TYRO Theatre program is led by CSC Education Director, Maria Brodeur, an actress and arts educator with experience in children’s theatre. Maria holds a BA in Theatre & Education from Rutgers University, and studied Meisner Acting Technique in NYC. Tuition for the two week program is $200 per student.
