Dad, Pop, Daddy, Pa, Pappy or whatever one calls their father is with honor on Father’s Day. Always the third Sunday in June, the day acknowledges the love and contributions that fathers and father figures, namely grandfathers, godfathers and uncles make in their children’s lives.
Historically, several events influenced the start of Father’s Day. Keeping with the tradition of Mother’s Day, it was only fitting to also honor fathers with a special day. Another event that spurred the holiday was the honoring of miners, many of who were fathers, killed in a mining accident in West Virginia.
Influential in the establishment of Father’s Day was Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father raised six children by himself after his wife passed away. Sonora pushed for the holiday and Father’s Day was first held in June of 1910, however it wasn’t officially recognized as a holiday until 1972.
There are many sentiments and quotes for fathers and for Father’s Day but one by an unknown author stands out.
