In 50 years, one can only imagine how many individual hikers have trekked the full or partial length of the Appalachian Trail. Most likely the numbers are in the thousands even though the trip encompasses 1,200 trails and thousands of miles going from Georgia to Maine.
The Appalachian referred to as the National Trails System was given national park status in 1968 by then President Lyndon B. Johnson when he signed the National Trail System Act.
The Appalachian Trail has always been one of Vernon and Wantage’s area attractions and has become more appealing in recent years. The Sussex- Wantage Library has an Appalachian Trail information showcase on display in the library’s lobby, celebrating the trail’s 50th year.
