Maple Grange Park hosted the Summer in the Mountains Art Festival on Saturday July 28.
The art festival was sponsored by the Vernon Township Board of Recreation and the Vernon Arts Advisory Committee and was the brain child of Recreation Board member Joyce Brensinger.
“I was inspired by the graffiti festivals in New York City,” said Brensinger. “The Board of Recreation usually sponsors sports- based events. We thought we needed to branch out and add artistic events as well.”
Township Recreation Director Mishelle Downtain reinforced and agreed with Brensinger’s comments.
”We’re striving towards having events that combine family, fun and community," she said.
DJ Denise Clarke, who donated her time, played lively tunes while six various age groups artistically revamped Maple Grange’s paths with creative chalk art. Prizes and awards were supplied by local businesses The Painted Grape and The Daily Bean.
On display were works by Dan Kadish and Highland Lakes resident Bruce Young. Young beautifully captured scenes of New York City with his pen and ink and pen and ink colorized scenes of Union Square, Little Italy, Katz’s Deli and many more. When asked about his NYC subject matter, Young compared his works to the Seinfeld TV show saying, ”It’s artwork about nothing, just regular life.”
Little Lily Ryan of Vernon displayed her artwork at the festival as well. The budding artist honored her mommy using paints.
