Event to raise awareness of human trafficking

NEWTON — The Family Partners of Morris and Sussex in collaboration with NORWESCAP will be sponsoring a free human trafficking awareness resource fair called “Hello My Name Is…” on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at the Sussex County Community College Performing Arts Center, 1 College Hill Road, Newton, NJ 07860. Human trafficking is a crime involving the exploitation of someone for the purposes of compelled labor or a commercial sex act through the use of force, fraud, or coercion.
The event will include presentations by human trafficking experts and advocates including Francis Koch - Sussex County Prosecutor; keynote speaker Annmarie Taggart - Deputy Attorney General Chair, NJ Human Trafficking Task Force Division of Criminal Justice; a survivor of human trafficking presented by a speaker from the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking; and Meg Rodriguez Morris County Supervising Assistant Prosecutor - Sex Crimes/Child Endangerment Unit.
“Hello My Name Is”, is a gathering of organizations that provide community resources and raise awareness about human trafficking. This crime affects individuals across the world, including here in the United States, and is commonly regarded as one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time. According to the 2017 statistics from the National Human Trafficking Hotline and BeFree Textline, last year there was a 13 percent jump in human trafficking cases in the United States, with 10,615 individual victims reporting a potential 4,863 human traffickers. Human trafficking affects every community in the United States across age, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds. Our goal is to educate local families, individuals, and the community about how to recognize and report a potential trafficking, and provide connections to organizations and agencies that can provide support.
The event is open to the public, and anyone who is interested in learning about the impact of human trafficking on our community is welcome to attend. Resource tables from local support organizations will be hosted. Food and drinks will be available at the event.
