VERNON — Aout 1,400 pounds of hygiene items, snacks, and game stations were shipped last week, according to Mark Wolfe, director of Supplies for Soldiers.
“Not only do we ship “goodies”, but also diversionary items including DVD’s and, in this case, 4 donated game stations” says Nancy Wolfe, co-founder of Supplies For Soldiers. “When the troops’ 14-hour day is over, they need to relax and unwind.”
The shipment only took 10 days to get to the outposts and servicemembers have already sent pictures and "thank you notes.
Earlier this year, Supplies For Soldiers temporarily halted distribution of boxes to Afghanistan. The USPS arbitrarily consolidated their shipping centers thus doubling the cost of shipping each box.
“We had no choice but to re-evaluate our mission and fundraising plans so that our troops are not penalized for the unilateral decision by the post office to raise their rates with no notice” says Mark Wolfe. “This shipment cost us $2,117 whereas last year it would have cost $1,200.”
“One plan is to actively seek business and corporate sponsors to partner with Supplies For Soldiers to help offset the extraordinary cost of shipping and providing the diversionary items (game stations, microwaves, DVD’s) to the new outposts” says Wolfe. “Any businesses or corporate owners are encouraged to contact us.”
