VERNON — Columbus Day weekend has the distinction of being Sussex County Arts and Heritage weekend since 2011, where arts and historical sites are open for public exploration, information and education.
The Price’s Switch One Room Schoolhouse in Vernon opened its doors for a view of the past. Built in 1840, the schoolhouse was in operation until 1958 when it was replaced by the new Walnut Ridge School. And Price’s Switch School was the last operational one room schoolhouse in Sussex County.
On Sunday, Oct. 7, members of the Vernon Historical Society toured guests of the schoolhouse, pointing out the original student and teacher desks, piano, chalkboard, pot-belly stove, which was the only form of heat and also pointing out the school’s outhouses in the backyard of the school.
Society members explained that one teacher amazingly taught all grades from Kindergarten to grade 12. These students studied math, reading, penmanship, history, geography and science.
Society members initiated a lively geography game with visitors, probably similar to games and lessons in the one room schoolhouse.
