Lounsberry Hollow K Kids take scare out of hunger

VERNON — Approximately 60 fourth and fifth grade students in Lounsberry Hollow School have been promoting and participating in community service activities this autumn.
The students are members of the Kiwanis based group, The K Kids. This group, facilitated Mrs. Barbara Monschauer, advocates service to school, community, and the world.
What do costumes, cans and scarecrows have in common? The K Kids designed and created eight scarecrows and displayed them in the school’s main lobby. Faculty, staff, and students were invited to vote for their favorite scarecrow by placing a non-perishable food or toiletry item in a box labeled with the scarecrow's name. The school had a goal of 500 items this year but ended up with a grand total of 934, The winning scarecrow this year was Tom the Devil, who, like the school’s physical education teachers was a huge Devils hockey fan,
This year students and staff took dressing up for Halloween to a new level. Walking food items, television characters, and even a dinosaur were spotted. To help burn off those Halloween characters one staff member brought back the 1980s aerobic craze with style.
The K Kids also took part in Trick or Treat for UNICEF. They created posters to advertise the collection and distributed boxes to all students in the building. This initiative allows children to collect money while trick or treating and the students of Lounsberry Hollow stepped up to the challenge. All money collected is donated to UNICEF to provide services to children worldwide.
What’s next for the K Kids?
November will find the students participating in several projects with local and national level impacts. Students will begin collecting used greeting cards for a special project and creating their own craft for local seniors. In December, students will experience firsthand having a direct impact on others as the K Kids will spend an afternoon reading to younger students in Walnut Ridge, Cedar Mountain and Rolling Hills.
