Vernon chief Mills to retire

After five years as chief, Randy Mills will be retiring from the Vernon Township Police Dept.
The Vernon Township Police Dept. announced Monday that Mills will retire on Jan. 31, 2019. after 28 1/2 years of service to the township. Mayor Harry Shortway has tapped Capt. Dan Yount go be the next chief. He will begin on Feb. 1, 2019. He will be the fifth chief since the department's founding in 1975.
Chief Mills started with the Vernon Police Department in July of 1990 as a patrol officer. While assigned to the patrol division Mills spent time as a school resource officer and DARE instructor. In 1998, Mills was assigned to the detective bureau and in 2002 Chief Mills was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In 2010 Mills was promoted to lieutenant and he was appointed Chief of Police in November of 2013 after the retirement of former chief Ron Wherry.
Mills is also a past member of the Vernon Twp. Ambulance Squad and the McAfee Fire Department. Additionally, Mills served as the Director of the Vernon Police Athletic League for 19 years from 1994 to 2013. Throughout his career Chief Mills was trained as a computer/internet crime expert. He received training from the FBI, Secret Service and the National White-Collar Crime Center on computer and internet crimes.
Young joined the Vernon Police Department in July of 2000. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2010 and promoted to Lieutenant in 2014. In 2016 Young was promoted to Captain and has served as second-in-command of the police department since that time. Captain Young is a graduate of William Patterson University with a BS in Business Management.
