Marilyn A. Perry, age 86, peacefully passed away on Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at the Health Care Unit at Bristol Glen in Newton. Born in Zanesville, Ohio to the late Robert H. And Marguerite G. (Barnhouse) Mawhorter, Mrs. Perry lived in Columbus, Ohio, before recently moving to Wantage. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Bowling Green State University and her Master of Arts from Ohio State University. She was a retired elementary teacher and reading specialist in the Columbus Public School System. Mrs. Perry devoted herself to giving young children a solid foundation in reading skills and life knowledge to set them on a path for success. Always placing the welfare of others before herself, Mrs. Perry lived a life of faith lovingly caring for and enjoying her family; sharing her vast knowledge of the Bible and living faith through her work with Emaus Walks; Women's Bible Study Fellowship; Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and Circle programs at the Church of the Master; selecting books for her church library; and volunteering at a local hospital.
She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators, having held various officer positions. Mrs. Perry was a member of the International Reading Association, Greater Columbus Reading Council, National Council of Teachers of English, National Education Association, Ohio Education Association, Central Ohio Education Association, the Columbus Education Association., and Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary. An avid reader, she also enjoyed writing, sewing, music, travel, and ornithology. Small in stature but mighty in her ability to share her love and faith, Mrs. Perry was an inspiration to those fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul J. Perry on December 6, 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Kozlowski and her husband James of Wantage; two step-children, Paula (Perry) Pyers and her husband Eric of Indiana and Delmar Perry and his wife Barbara of Columbus, Ohio; her brother, Robert L. Mawhorter and his wife Kay of Bradenton, Florida; six grandchildren, Ben Kozlowski and his wife Sarah of Budd Lake, New Jersey, Allie Conklin and her husband Steve of Benton, PA, London Collier of Tennessee, Helen Carter and her husband Shannon, Brian Pyers, and Jonathan Perry and his wife Cindy; and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Road, Columbus, OH 43229. Interment to follow at Glen Rest Memorial Estate in Reynoldsburg. Friends may pay their respects to the family one hour prior to the funeral on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m..at Schoedinger North Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be offered in Marilyn A. Perry’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 15829, Arlington, Va., 22215.
