Local historian brings stones to life

Ron Dupont, a local historian, recently spoke to the freshman Earth Science classes at Vernon Township High School about the natural resources of Vernon and their historic uses. He detailed the use of native flint by the Native Americans for tools and the colonists of the Revolutionary War for their flintlock rifles. He had stories about the iron ore in the many iron mines found here and the native limestone and limestone kilns used by farmers, as well as the Bethlehem Steel Company.
The students appreciated learning about how the local resources contributed to the life of the early peoples who lived on these same lands.
