High Point students 'Fill the Bus'

WANTAGE — In coordination with Sussex County Social Services, High Point Regional High School students “Filled the Bus 2018,” Dec. 20, with 5,222 pounds of collected food.
Fill the Bus is a yearly High Point tradition to help Sussex County residents in need.
As part of High Point’s tradition, the entire school was divided into two groups of students who lined both sides of the halls. First the Freshmen and Sophomores passed cans and packages of food one-to-the- other, from the cafeteria all the way to the bus at the other end of the building.
Later, the Juniors and Seniors took their turn passing food down the building halls.
In the cafeteria, some of the “Fill the Bus 2018” committee of 40, mostly seniors, were passing the cans and other food out into the hall.
The students said they had been in front of Walmart collecting food.
Bing Crosby’s mellow tones sang over the loud speakers, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.”
Students in the hall passed food to each other, commenting about huge cans of tuna, tomato soup, and pineapple chunks. There was a lot of joy, laughter, and chatter among everyone.
Further down the hall, the purple light from the greenhouse shone on some of the students passing food along the halls.
At the end of the building, the dull thud of cans continued to fill boxes in the bus.
After the two rotations, Principal Jonathan Tallamy said the committee would load all the rest of the food from the cafeteria and bring it to the bus.
He also said, the “Fill the Bus” committee was fantastic this year – a great group of students. They really did a nice job, Tallamy added, organizing in the last two and one half weeks. Tallamy concluded, he was very proud of everyone, and they had a fantastic turn out from both staff and students.
