FRANKLIN — A Wantage woman faces charges after police looked into several bomb threats made in the borough on Monday, Feb. 11.
Franklin police said Amanda Toth, 26, was charged with causing a false public alarm, identity theft and cyber harassment.
Franklin police received a call at 9:33 a.m. from the franchise owner of the Franklin McDonald’s on Route 23, reporting that he had received a bomb threat via text message, specifically threatening that location. Additionally, owners reported that an employee had received a similar message relating that people would be injured at the McDonald's in Franklin on Feb. 11.
Patrols responded and cleared the building. The Franklin Fire Department and Emergency Medical Technicians were placed on standby as a precaution. Both elementary schools in the Borough were notified and school administration took appropriate action.
The Franklin Borough School performed a stay-in-place drill in response to the threat at McDonald's. It was the second security drill of the day as a planned lockdown drill was performed earlier in the day. The stay-in-place was ended after the police investigation at McDonald's ended.
A New Jersey State Police explosive detection canine cleared the McDonald's following a search where no explosives were detected. The building was deemed safe. During the investigation, threats were made via text message to one of the employees of the Franklin McDonald's at their Hamburg residence later in the afternoon. An explosive detection canine was again used to confirm that no explosives were in the Hamburg residence. The residence was searched and deemed safe.
Following several leads throughout the day, detectives were led Toth, who police said was found to have used an application disguising her cell phone contact information in an effort to impersonate another making the threats. Police said Toth was found to have made the threats.
Toth was processed and lodged in the Sussex County Jail pending central judicial processing.
The Franklin Police were assisted by the NJSP Explosive Detection Canine unit, the Sussex County Prosecutors Office high tech crimes unit, and the Sussex County Prosecutors Office major crimes unit.
