NEWTON – Sussex County Community College (SCCC) is pleased to announce that the touring company of the nationally renowned Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey will present a matinee performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream at SCCC’s beautiful Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 1:30pm. This one-time event, in support of the Freshman English curriculum, is open to all students as well as all members of the community. No tickets are required, and admission is free. Seating is limited and is first come, first served.
“Shakespeare’s plays were not meant to be read,” said Richard Goffman, adjunct professor of English at the College, who organized the event. “The plays are meant to be seen, produced, and experienced live. Whenever I can, I want to get my students inside a theater. That’s where we see why Shakespeare is so important, so relevant and so loved more than 400 years after his death. Any difficulty with the language melts away in the presence of trained actors and professional production values.”
“As a vital member of our community, we feel that our educational mission is served well when we create cultural events such as this for our students, and include the wider community in Newton and surrounding towns,” said Dr. Mercedes Aguirre Batty, vice president of academic affairs at SCCC.
Shakespeare LIVE! is a self-contained professional touring company, under the auspices of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. They perform at schools and colleges throughout the state. Each performance by Shakespeare LIVE! is energetic, exciting and engaging, witty and visually imaginative - making Shakespeare accessible and appealing to students and everyone else.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, and is performed around the world more often than any other of his plays.
