Refuge ready for spring season

SUSSEX BOROUGH — Friends of Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge are ready for the spring season with a number of programs for the public.
On March 16, families with school-age children are invited to find out about the early frogs that emerge once the temperatures start to warm. Activities and a craft go from 10 to 11 a.m. If the weather is suitable, families should expect to spend part of the time outdoors. Pre-register for this Nature's Kids program by emailing karensphotos@optonline.net.
On March 28, people interested in finding and identifying ducks, geese, and other water birds are invited to the Waterfowl Walk at 3 p.m. An indoor slide presentation will provide tips on knowing the waterfowl usually seen in the refuge during spring migration. Following the talk, the group will head outside to look for birds in the area.
On March 30, the public is invited to the Woodcock Watch at 7 p.m. Each spring, as the sun sets, this small bird is known to perform an elaborate courtship ritual that takes to the air. The indoor introduction will be followed by a short drive to the site in the refuge where the woodcocks are active. Participants should dress for cooler evening temperatures.
