Sparta - Giant Gymnastics is proud to announce its reopening.
This is the second change of location for owners Jennifer and John Skorski’s Sussex County Giant Gymnastics. The Skorski’s have 48 years of gymnastics coaching between them, and both were competitive gymnasts as children. Having opened their first location in Hackettstown in 2006, the two always intended to open a second location in Sussex County, where they resided. When Robert and Patricia Schutz, owners of Schutz Gymnastics, decided to retire and sell the business, they approached the Skorski’s and the rest is history. Continuing the family-oriented feel and passion for sharing their love of gymnastics, the Skorski’s opened in the former Schutz Gymnastics location in Lafayette in 2011. Just two years later, the business had grown and the need for more space became evident. They moved into the White Lake road location in 2013.
“In 2016 Simone Biles put gymnastics back on the map,” explained Jennifer. “Who wouldn’t want to try gymnastics after watching Simone steal the hearts of both kids and adults alike,” John said.
Giant Gymnastics had once again found itself needing additional space, and two years ago the search began.
“While we were sad to hear a fellow colleague would no longer be there to offer the sport we all love so much, we couldn’t ignore the opportunity it posed for us as the space was almost exactly what we were looking for," he said.
While classes started this past Monday, the official Grand Re-Opening celebration will be held at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. The event is open to the public and will feature free open gym time for all ages. Children under 6 will be able to play in Giant’s new 1500 square foot preschool area, while ages 6 and up can play in the main gym. Knowing that gymnastics provides so many opportunities for social, physical, and cognitive development, it is so important for Giant to offer dedicated space to help foster this growth in its youngest participants.
With the additional space comes new equipment, all of which will be in place by the end of March, if not sooner. That equipment means new opportunities for area students to explore more than just artistic gymnastics. The addition of a rod floor and two full-sized trampolines will allow Coach Anthony Russo, a former Tumbling and Trampoline competitive gymnast, to finally begin his dream of teaching TNT.
“Gymnastics has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, ranging from competing when I lived in Florida to my passion for tumbling,” Russo said. “Being a coach with Giant the last four years barely feels like work because I get to do what I love for a living. And now I get to share my passion for my favorite discipline, Power Tumbling and Trampoline.” The new TNT program at Giant begins in April, though class registration has begun. Russo will also offer a special 4-week tumbling clinic for area students trying out for high school cheerleading called Cheer Prep. The clinic is designed to help students get ready for spring tryouts. Online registration is open for that as well.
