VTHS honors outstanding athletes

    The Vernon Township High School Athletic Dept. honored its Athletes of the Week for the first two weeks of the spring 2019 season.
    Week 1
    Sophomore Sydney Riker has gotten off to a great start in goal for the varsity girls lacrosse Team. The girls are off to 6-3 start.
    According to Coach Carlson, Sydney has been a great leader on the field for the Vikings. Her hard work in the off-season is very evident and her confidence and ability has grown tremendously through the season.
    Senior Andrew Lisa had 22 kills, 14 digs, and I block through the first 3 matches for the varsity boys volleyball team. Andrew is currently ranked 9th in the state in aces.
    According to Coach DeYoung, Andrew is a selfless leader who does whatever the team needs from him to ensure success. He is also an excellent motivator and role model for his teammates in the program.
    Week 2
    Junior sprinter, Jessica Wilkens of the girls track team, won first place at the Iron Dukes Invitational this past Friday in Marlboro, N.Y. She was also the anchor leg in the winning 4x100-relay team. Jessica is currently undefeated in the 100m and 200m races.
    According to Coach Ferguson, Jessica is an extremely hard worker who is focused and pushes herself to be the best.
    Freshmen John Kowalski has made a great impression thus far in the early stages of the varsity baseball season. In three games last week against Sussex Tech, Hackettstown and Jefferson, John batted .450 with 4 RBIs, had 3 stolen bases and scored 4 runs.
    According to Coach Berge, John is a solid all-around player who can play various defensive positions.
