The Vernon Township Board of Education unanimously voted to abolish the 3:30 bus for the 2019-20 school year.
"I can't say this is the best solution," Assistant Supinterndent Charles McKay said on the April 17 Board of Education meeting.
McKay said the group discovered that most kids stayed for more than one activity after school and the 3:30 bus did not provide enough time after school for activities. The 3:30 p.m. late bus also would not be available to students in athletics as they would still be on the practice field at that time.
Christian Fieldhouse, a student at Vernon Township High School said eliminating the bus would be a mistake.
"These days have pretty good amount of conflicts," Fieldhouse said. "It's hard for kids to stay involved when they only have 2 days to do it."
He also said abolishing the 3:30 p.m. bus would keep kids in school for 10 1/2 hours.
"It's a bit of a stretch to ask these kids to stay so long," Fieldhouse said.
