Breast cancer survivors are invited to a unique celebration of life at Project Self-Sufficiency on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Survivor Celebration will feature break-out sessions, entertainment, lunch, music and interactive exhibits.
A keynote presentation will be offered by patient advocate, author and motivational speaker Katya Lezin. The celebration is free, but space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Interested participants must call Project Self-Sufficiency at 973-940-3500 or 844-807-3500 to register.
During her presentation, Lezin, whose appearance is sponsored by Myriad Genetics, plans to highlight her own journey through cancer and recovery, and touch on the importance of genetic testing, humor and other skills she learned along the way. Break-out sessions for participants will include guided meditation and chair yoga by representatives from K &P Holistic Fitness, a cooking demonstration by the registered dietician at Shop Rite of Newton, and a discussion of the Livestrong Program offered by the Sussex County YMCA. A Question and Answer session will be facilitated by medical oncologist Dr. May Abdo-Matkiwsky, Regional Cancer Care Associates, and Lymphedema Therapist Jennifer Koch.
Musical entertainment will be offered by Sussex County Music Workshop students Amanda Nowell, Katherine Schumacher and Tiffany Van Tassel under the direction of Margaret Korczynski. Raffles and other prizes will be awarded throughout the event. Numerous vendors will be available to offer tips on health, wellness, fashion and exercise.
“Sussex County continues to have a high incidence of incurable breast cancer, so it is with great joy that we are able to honor those women from our area who have survived this disease,” noted Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon. “With survival, however, comes the need to maintain well-being. This Survivorship Celebration will instruct participants about following a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, exercise and stress relief techniques. We are grateful to all of the individuals and organizations who have agreed to join in this special celebration of life.”
The Survivor Celebration is sponsored by Project Self-Sufficiency in collaboration with partners Regional Cancer Care Associates, Sparta Cancer Center, Sussex County Office of Public Health Nursing and the Sussex County New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection. The Survivor Celebration is free and open to Sussex County breast cancer survivors, but registration is required. To register, call 973-940-3500.
