At their short annual meeting held on June 8, the Dorothy Henry Friends of the Library awarded two scholarships and the Library’s Family of the Year.
Friends President Lynne La Carrubba and branch librarian Jacquie Oregero presented the Evanick family with the Family of the Year award. The family was unable to be present at the meeting but a book entitled The Plaza by Julie Satow will distinguish the family with a book dedication shield. The award, chosen by the library staff, honors a family who utilizes the library for education, entertainment, creativity and advancement purposes.
Two local young women Sabrina Kunze, a senior at Wallkill Valley High School and Jasmine Walker, a senior at Vernon Township High School were on hand to accept scholarships through the Library Friends. The scholarships will help both students with their college textbooks. The students wrote essays and read their work at the annual meeting. Kunze expressed her love for books and the library.
“The library helped me learn about the diversity on the planet and taught me tolerance and compassion for all,” she read.
Kunze plans on attending Montclair State University with a major in Music Education.
Walker stated that,” Everything you need is at the library.”
She expressed how the library extended her imagination. How excited she was to receive her first library card at age five and fondly remembered memories of her Girl Scout days and meetings at the library. Walker will be a freshman this fall at Centenary College majoring in Criminal Justice.
