Vernon freshman serves as speaker at colleges

Joseph Dunlop, a freshman at Vernon Township High School, was selected to deliver a keynote address at the “Dare to Dream” conferences at William Paterson University and Montclair State University in May..
His speech, “Transitioning to High School or Climbing Mt. Everest: Which is More Challenging?” was presented to hundreds of high school students and teachers from throughout the state of New Jersey. His message, which spotlighted the importance of self- advocacy, resilience and perseverance, was met with thunderous applause and several standing ovations. Additionally, Dunlop is a VTHS honor student who has been an active member of the Boy Scouts for nine years. He is currently working on his future goal of earning an Eagle Scout Award.
The New Jersey Department of Education sponsors “Dare to Dream” student leadership conferences that highlight strategies and information designed to prepare high school students with disabilities for college and career readiness. Each conference features keynote presentations from accomplished students and young adults who have demonstrated exemplary self-advocacy and leadership skills. “Dare to Dream” has long been a positive and empowering experience for New Jersey students.
