College offers STEAM-based summer camp for ages 6-14

Sussex County Community College is again joining forces with Black Rocket, a national leader in tech-education, for STEAM-based interactive camps for youngsters ages 6 to 14.

The camps are led by teachers in live classes and cover topics ranging from coding to eSports. Participants will get to interact with fellow learners all over the country and break away into small groups.

Some courses begin on June 7 with offerings throughout the summer. They include Minecraft Animators, Video Game Animation, App Attack! Inventor’s League-Prototyping for the Future, Make Your First Video Game, and eSports Apprentice.

Several of the offerings teach aspiring game designers level editing, 3D modeling, gameplay creation, and using scripts and variables. In Battle Royale: Make Your First Fortnite Style Video Game, participants will design levels and take part in eSports League matches with other schools around the country.

Classic gamers will enjoy Make Your First Video Game, which makes use of class 2D platform style games to teach level design, sound, and simple coding. And Rocket Kart Racers draws inspiration from games like Mario Kart to create 3D racing and crash kart levels.

Future coding masters will enjoy Code Breakers, where they will learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of fun web projects and design challenges. JavaScript

Developer Jam will use the powerful software to create animated memes and games. Learn the same programming language used by NASA and the CIA to create apps and games in Python Programmers.

Courses themed around Minecraft, Pokemon, Roblox, are also being offered.

Young Authors, where children will develop their own story from start to finish, ending with their own published soft cover book, is new this year. They will plot development, character creation, review literary techniques, and self-expression activities, including illustration and dialogue.

Courses start at $135 per student. Some classes have an additional $10 licensing fee. Software information and class links will be provided upon registration.
