Roy “Chirpie” L. Rome, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019 at Newton Medical Center while surrounded by his loving family. Born in the Colesville section of Wantage to the late Henry and Serena-Post Card Rome, Chirpie had lived in Sussex County all of his life. He had been a self-employed Auto Body Technician, owning and operating Rome’s Auto Body located behind Rome’s High Point Exxon/Coastal in the Colesville section of Wantage and retired at age 73. Chirpie had been a member of the Colesville Fire Department for 52 years. He was an avid hunter and a member of the NRA. Chirpie enjoyed bowling, watching Yankees games, driving Willys Jeep, and most importantly enjoyed spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Elsie (Kinney) Rome on May 17, 2016 and 11 siblings. Chirpie is survived by his daughter, Linda Funnell and her husband, Stephen, of Wantage; his son, Russell Rome and his wife Brenda of Wantage; his brothers, Virgil Rome of Newton and Calvin Card of Bradenton, Florida; 6 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank Street (Route 23), Sussex. Interment to follow at Clove Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects to the family prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
