Rolling Hills hosts Chinese musician

Rolling Hills School hosted one of the most honored traditional Chinese musicians in the world, Chen Tao on Friday, Nov. 22.

Chen Tao is an internationally acclaimed Chinese flutist, music educator, composer and conductor of Chinese orchestra. He is also the founder and director of Melody of Dragon, Inc. Chen Tao is not only a specialist on the flute, but he is also a virtuoso performer on other traditional Chinese wind instruments as well.

Since coming to the U.S. in 1993, Chen Tao has been invited to perform and lecture throughout the country. Most notably, Chen has performed at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City. Chen Tao has been referred to as "the king of the flute" and is truly an outstanding figure in the realm of woodwind music, both in China and throughout the world.

The assembly was sponsored by The Vernon Lights Festival, which opened for its inaugural season on Nov. 29.

The assembly provided students with the cultural background regarding the Chinese New Year and the important use of lanterns to celebrate the New Year. Chen explained to all students the differences in Chinese Music while performing several numbers on the bamboo flute to everyone's delight.
