Frolicking in the park
VERNON — Frolicking canines were abundant at the official grand opening of the Vernon Dog Park on May 5.
Barbara Green, president of the Dog Owners Gathering Society of Vernon, said the dedication of the group’s volunteers for nearly seven years brought about their “field of dreams."
“Approximately seven years ago a survey was sent out to residents to see how an off-leash dog park would be accepted in Vernon," said Green. According to Green, comments ranged from people who thought it was a great idea to accusations of bias against cats. Some residents thought the park would drive up their taxes.
A few months after the survey, a small group of residents met for the first time to look into the possibility. Sevent years later, after overcoming a few obstacles, DOGS had their park.
The group will be holding their seventh annual dog wash/nail clipping/micro-chipping event this July. For more information, contact Green at 201-230-3973 or barb@dogsofvernon.org or visit www.dogsofvernon.org.
