June Programs at the Sussex County Libraries

    In June, the Sussex County Libraries will continue to offer their regular weekly and monthly programs and begin registration for Summer Reading which officially kicks off with Rizzo’s Reptiles visiting every branch at the end of the month.

    This year’s summer reading theme for children 6 months through 6th grade is Dig Into Reading, the theme for teens is Beneath the Surface and adults will have their own program, Groundbreaking Reads. For complete details go to www.sussexcountylibrary.org.

    Children and Family Programs
    Meet Bob the Builder — The Dennis Branch on Main Street in Newton is building up to summer reading with a visit from Bob the Builder. Kids entering preK and up are invited to the branch any time between 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday, June 3 to meet Bob and sign up for the Dig Into Reading program.

    Read-to-a-Dog — Children ages five to 10 are invited to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. Each child will be allowed a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time. The dogs provide an uncritical ear while the children gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. Each child signs up for a specific time slot: 4, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45 p.m. Registration begins June 11 and is in person or over the phone by calling the Louise Childs Branch at 973-770-1000.

    Gaming at Main Library — The Community Room at Main Library is reserved the first Wednesday of each month, June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., to provide a place for gamers to meet up with friends and enjoy group play. Thee Wii system is set up, and a variety of board games and playing cards are available. The program is geared to kids in grades four and up but younger siblings are welcome too. No registration required.

    LEGO Club — Each session includes a theme and book talk followed by an hour of LEGO creating. The club is open to children in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Participation is limited. Registration is preferred but walk-ins are welcome if space allows. Sussex-Wantage: Wednesday June 12 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

    Main Library: Saturday June 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

    Teen Programs
    Pen & Ink Drawing Classes for Teens and Adults — Local artist, Doris Schwint, will instruct teens and adults how to start with a pencil outline and use different techniques to create effects in ink. All materials supplied. These are the latest in a series of programs held in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Caldecott Medal. Space is limited to 20 participants ages 14 and older at each location. Registration required. Franklin: Wednesday June 5 at 3:30 p.m. Louise Childs: Saturday June 8 at 10 a.m.

    Teen Volunteers — All branches are welcoming teen volunteers, ages 14 and up, to assist with the Summer Reading program. All interested teens must register for and attend an orientation meeting. Sussex-Wantage: Wednesday June 12 at 3 and 7 p.m. Franklin: Friday June 14 at 4 p.m. Louise Childs: Tuesday June 18 at 3:30 p.m. Dorothy Henry: Wednesday June 19 at 3:30 p.m. Main Library: Wednesday June 19 at 7 p.m. Dennis: Friday June 21 at 3 p.m.

    Plan a Teen Zombie Party — Teens in grades seventh to 12 are invited to Main Library to help plan a Zombie Bash being held at the Sussex-Wantage branch in July. Free snacks will be served. No registration required. Main Library: Saturday June 15 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

    Onigiri Animanga Club — The Animanga Club meets the first Friday and third Saturday of each month. Teens in grades seventh to 12 are invited to join in as they discuss their favorite manga, watch anime, indulge in cosplay, try interesting snacks and more. On June 7 they'll meet up at AnimeNext in Somerset. On June 15 they'll discuss the show. New members always welcome, no registration required. Main Library: Saturday June 15 from 2 to 4 p.m.

    Adult Programs
    Classic Movie Monday — Come to Main Library the first Monday of the month to watch a classic movie in the community room. Free popcorn for all. Call the branch at 973 948-3660 ext. 3420 for the title.

    Protecting Yourself From Identity Fraud — Kehleigh Pepe from Liberty Mutual will be at the Louise Childs Branch in Stanhope on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. to explain what identity fraud is, how it happens and how to avoid it. Knowledge is your best defense. Please go online or call the branch to register.

    The Basics of Selling on eBay — Joseph E. Baatz, an Education Specialist trained by eBay, will be at the Louise Childs Branch in Stanhope on Tuesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. to conduct a seminar on the right way to sell on eBay. Fundamentals of listing, pricing and monitoring your sales will be covered. You will also learn to avoid the many costly mistakes new eBay sellers often make.

    LC Readers Book Discussion Group — The LC Readers will meet the first Wednesday of every month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Louise Childs Branch in Stanhope. Group picks will focus on thought-provoking, contemporary literature with occasional discussion of notable nonfiction as well. For the June 5 meeting the group will read and discuss Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. All interested parties are welcome, no registration required.     Adult Book Club — The Adult Book Club meets at Main Library on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The club is open to all lovers of literature, no registration required.     “Not Just Chick Lit” Book Club — The Book Club welcomes all enthusiastic readers, both male and female, interested in reading and discussing good literature. The club will meet at the Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon on Tuesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss The Lawgiver by Herman Wouk. New members always welcome, no registration required.

    Beginners Yoga Club — The Beginners Yoga Club meets every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon in the community room at Main Library. No experience is necessary and no registration is required. Wear loose clothing.

    Yoga and Meditation with Jane — Local yoga instructor Jane Bielen Schear will be at the Main Library four Saturdays in June (no class June 15) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to lead a yoga class (11 a.m. to noon) followed by a meditation session (12:30 to 1 p.m.). No previous experience necessary. Wear loose clothing. No registration is required.

    Sussex County Library Needlers — The Needlers are open to anyone with a love of handiwork – knitters, crocheters, embroiderers and counted cross stitchers all welcome. Come to the Main Library every Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. to share patterns, learn new stitches and make new friends. No registration required.

    Knit and Spin with Lisa Hirkaler — Join local artist, Lisa Hirkaler, and an ever-changing group of beginner-to-advanced knitters, crocheters and spinners to learn and share techniques. The group meets the first and third Thursdays of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in the community room at the Sussex-Wantage library. All levels of adult artists are welcome. There is no fee to attend and no registration required, but you must bring your own supplies and materials.

    Sussex-Wantage Quilt Club — The club will meet in the community room at Sussex-Wantage Library the first and third Wednesdays in June at 7 p.m. All levels of quilters are welcome, no registration required. For more information call Terri at 973 875-9791.

    The Sussex BARDS — Sussex BARDS meet in the community room at Main Library the first and third Mondays of every month from 6 to 8 p.m. The group offers a supportive and encouraging environment for both aspiring and experienced writers. Those who are seeking to become published professionals or simply share their creativity with others are welcome. All genres are discussed, no registration required.
