Local ballplayers can learn from the pros this summer at the All-New Skylands Stadium. The Sussex County Miners, New Jersey’s newest professional baseball team, will host summer baseball camp from July 18-22 with instruction from Miners manager and former New York Met Bobby Jones.
Youngsters will have the chance to take the field at Skylands Stadium, home of the Miners, and learn the fundamentals of the game from Jones, as well as some of the Miners players. From throwing a proper fastball, to turning double plays to slamming line drives all over the field, area youth will learn how to do it all from some of the game’s best.
Jones’ baseball resume is extensive. The left-hander’s big league career spanned parts of six seasons and included stints with four different Major League teams. The Miners’ manager pitched for the Colorado Rockies from 1997-99, the Mets in 2000 and 2002, the San Diego Padres in 2002 and won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2004. All told, Jones appeared in 99 games during his Major League career and pitched 324.2 innings.
The Miners Baseball Camp is open to ages 7-14. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily at the All-New Skylands Stadium. There will be no camp on July 20.
In addition to professional instruction from Jones and the Miners, all campers will receive a ticket to a 2016 Sussex County Miners home game, a camp T-shirt and a pizza party on the last day of camp. The cost to participate is $199 per camper, but discounts are available for siblings and teams.
