Girls golf team beats Wallkill Valley

VERNON. Boys team loses its season opener to the Rangers.

Uriah Sacdalan shot a team-low 52 to lead the Vernon Township High School girls golf team to a season-opening 244-256 over Wallkill Valley on Tuesday, March 26 at the Great Gorge Country Club in Vernon.

The Vikings also were paced by Caitlyn Jenson and Audrey Steinbach, who each shot a 62, and Rihanna Rojas, who carded a 68.

The Vernon boys also opened their 2024 campaign on March 26, dropping a 160-189 decision to Wallkill Valley also at Great Gorge.

Drew Shawgo shot a 41 to steer Vernon, followed by Jake Chromcik (45), Nicholas Decker (51), Colin Pegley (52), Nick Heinzinger (62) and Carter Wright (63).

Baseball

Last season, the Vikings went 17-6 and reached the quarterfinal rounds of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex and New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournaments under head coach Stephen Myhren.

Back this spring are seniors Colin Dignan (21 hits, 11 RBI, 17 runs, five doubles) and Drew Ebbighuasen (27 hits, 19 RBI, 12 runs, six doubles), juniors Matthew Baumann (18 hits, 16 runs, 15 walks) and Michael Pecoraro (3.87 ERA), and sophomore Gavin Bruno (five RBI).

Vernon is scheduled to play at North Warren at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4 before playing its home opener against Newton at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.

Softball

Senior Maryanna Cova-Gomez (32 hits, 16 RBI, 19 runs), juniors Abigail Mundhenk (11 hits, nine runs) and Kaylie Orlando (11 hits, eight runs), and sophomores Carly Amorosi (26 hits, 15 runs, nine stolen bases) and Elizabeth Peek (19 hits, 12 RBI, nine runs, three doubles) are back from last year’s 10-10 campaign.

The Vikings are slated to play host to Morris Tech at 11 a.m. April 4 before playing at Lenape Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

Boys lacrosse

Last year’s 8-9 squad reached the semifinal round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament under head coach Adam Coleman.

The Vikings return their two leading scorers from last season - senior Ty Holden (30 goals, eight assists) and Kane Lynch (20 goals, 34 assists) - as well as the goalies: junior Luca Vizzini (136 saves) and senior Damon Greenwood (86 saves).

Vernon will play its home opener at 4:30 p.m. April 4 against Morristown-Beard before playing host to Sparta at 10 a.m. April 6.

Girls lacrosse

Sidney Van Tassel, who totaled 78 goals and 12 assists last season, will enter her senior campaign with 155 goals and 50 assists.

She’ll be joined by senior Makenna Thomas, who had 20 goals last year, and junior goalie Abby Sokolewicz (95 saves).

The Vikings are set to play host to Morris Hills at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 8.

Boys volleyball

The Vikings went 14-8 last year, including a trip to the final round of the NJAC Tournament, where they bowed to Randolph, 2-0.

Seniors Pearse Esposito (404 assists, 124 digs, 40 kills, 27 aces), Ben Jurewicz (148 kills, 20 blocks, 50 digs) and Tristan Santiago (232 digs, 23 assists, 23 aces) and juniors Caden Krzyzak (49 kills) and Josh Jean (142 kills, 132 digs) are back for this season.

Vernon will play host to Bergen Tech at 10 a.m. April 4 before welcoming Chatham at 4 p.m. April 9.

Boys tennis

Vernon, which went 9-4 a year ago, returns senior Owen Young and junior Michael Onysko-Koch from last year’s starting lineup.

The Vikings will play at Lenape Valley at 11 a.m. April 4 before playing High Point at 3:30 p.m. April 9.

Outdoor track

The Vernon boys and girls track squads each will get their seasons under way April 9, when they meet Jefferson in Oak Ridge at 4 p.m.
