Author appearance is a success

SPARTA It was standing room only at Sparta Books last Thursday. About 60 people showed up for the wine, jumbo shrimp and other tasty fare provided by owner Donna Fell. Patrons stayed to hear Hillary Jordan read in a soft Southern accent, which was the perfect vehicle to convey the story of “Mudbound.” Listeners asked questions about the book and its characters. Most of them were book club people. Book clubs have been very good to “Mudbound,” as have independent bookstores who put the book into customers hands. Being Hillary’s first novel, this is a treasure easily overlooked unless it is recommended. Sparta Books will be hosting other authors, and with support from the community, it can be done on a regular basis. As publishers notice the turn-out and success of each event, it puts Sparta Books on the radar’ as a store at which to have events.
