Kevin Mitchell lead a group of more than 30 people on a winter trek through Lusscroft Farm on Sunday.

It wasn't your typical over the river and through the woods adventure. Mitchell stopped along the way explaining the native animal tracks and behaviors, edible and poisonous plant life, the workings of the maple sugaring process at Lusscroft Sugar Shack, how trees are affected when hit by lightening and more.

Snow shoes were provided by Montclair State University's New Jersey School of Conservation to anyone who wanted to give them a try in the crusty snow. The walk lead through the sugar maple trees called the sugar bush area, over some bridges, through the fields and along the woods lasting one and a half hours and ending with hot cocoa and a snack back at the house.

On April 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. will be the 6th Annual Vernal Pool Exploration.
