Newton — The Tai Yim King Fu Lion and Dragon Dancers will perform at Sussex County Community College on Tuesday, April 14, at 10:50 a.m. in the Student Center Theater, D Building. Having performed at many colleges and universities, as well as the Smithsonian Institute and the Kennedy Center, the dancing team continues the tradition of lion dancing. The dancing demonstration includes a paper mache lion, around 12 feet long, with many elaborate decorations and operated by the tail. One person performs as the head of the lion while the second person follows as the tail. A group of musicians playing a drum, a gong and cymbals represent the pots and pans the villagers used. As for the martial arts portion of the program, traditional Shaolin Hung Fut Kung Fu will be performed featuring linear, circular, and angular techniques which results in movements that are powerful and explosive, yet precise, flowing and without rigidity. Tickets are $5 for the community and free to SCCC students with a valid ID. For more information, call 973-300-2232.
