Sparta — Sparta resident Amanda Garger’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, “A Healthy Taste of Sparta,” is generating much interest by local residents and area restaurants. The project features Sparta restaurants that are offering healthy menu items in an attempt to help customers eat healthy while eating out. Amanda developed this project in conjunction with the Sparta Recreation Department’s Step Up to Health program, a national initiative to promote physical activity and healthier lifestyles. Sparta restaurants participating during the month of June are: Alpine Creamery, Café Pierrot, Casa Mia, Dunkin Donuts, Homer’s Restaurant, Il Porto, Krogh’s Restaurant & Brew Pub, PJ’s Deli and Doghouse, the Pizza Place, TJ’s Pizzeria Café and Tanti Baci Caffé. In addition, many of these restaurants are featuring discounts on their healthy menu items to customers who wear their green Step Up to Health bracelets. Amanda’s booth on Sparta Day featured the new food pyramid and healthy snack choices, and gave residents a chance to get a bracelet. Free bracelets are also available at the Sparta Recreation office. Sparta restaurants and eateries interested in participating in a Healthy Taste of Sparta should contact Amanda at amandagarger@yahoo.com. There is no cost to participate.
