Local students to perform in a modernized vaudeville variety show

A classic vaudeville style variety show, featuring three local students, performing some familiar favorites like Abbott and Costello's famous routine "Who's on First," and newer more modern style performances is coming to area this week.

Centenary College Theatre Department presents "Spectacular! Spectacular!", which is being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Haley James of Jefferson Township and Cody Riker and Tyler Milazzo both of Wantage will be among those doing what they can to present a night of fun for the whole family.

Locals hit the stage
The show was actually the idea of another student, according to James.

"Amanda Roy came up with the idea for her senior thesis show by taking inspiration from her passions as well as from vaudeville itself and the song 'Spectacular! Spectacular!' from the show/movie 'Moulin Rouge,'" she explained.

Riker, though a performer in other shows, is actually working behind the scenes this time around.

"I was actually asked by Amanda to be the assistant stage manager for this production," he said. "Due to the fact that I am usually onstage it is nice to have a chance to be behind the scenes."

Meanwhile, James will be gracing the stage.

"I auditioned for the show a few months ago armed with a song from 'Hairspray' and high hopes," James said.

This show will not be the first time James performs.

"At Centenary College, I have been involved as a freshman in 'A Christmas Carol' and I was the assistant stage manager for two productions," James said. "I am currently cast in another student thesis show called 'Who I Am.' Outside of Centenary College I am involved in an improv group called 'Uncorked.' In the summers, I open up for the tribute shows at the Art Bonito Amphitheater in Jefferson Township."

Riker also has plenty of theater experience.

"I have been in over 40 productions across the tri-state area and have performed in such venues as the Sussex County PAC, Centenary Stage Company, Cornerstone Playhouse and Tri-state Actors Theatre," he said. "I have also been featured in the local web series 'Spirit Hunters the Series' and the upcoming feature film 'Hands of Stone.'"

Something for everyone
"People can expect lots of laughs, genuine entertainment and top-notch performances from this show," James said.

Riker agrees, pointing out the diverse collection of styles in the show.

"It has something for everyone," he said. "If you're a fan of Broadway, we have two Broadway numbers in the show. If you like dance, we have multiple acts. If you just want to laugh, then you will have so much fun laughing at the vaudeville and original material. So come and enjoy a night at the theatre."
