Public invited to celebrate canal

    Stanhope — The Canal Society of New Jersey invites the public to discover the heritage of the Morris Canal and Waterloo Village on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be boat rides on the Morris Canal and guided tours of the canal sites will be offered. There will also be self-guided walking tours of the historic buildings that line the ancient stagecoach road. Children will be able to play with old-fashioned wooden toys within sight of the canal. The Canal Museum, Smith Store, and Rutan Cabin will be open for visits. There will also be demonstrations of historic candle-making techniques at the Rutan Cabin. The reconstructed Lenape Indian Village will be open for tours, as well. These events are held in conjunction with the NJ DEP Division of Parks and Forestry. Admission is free, and the events will take place rain or shine. Waterloo Village is located at 525 Waterloo Road in Stanhope. It is accessible from Routes 80, 46, and 206.
