Sparta — Local restaurants are joining the Sparta Recreation Department’s Step Up To Health program by featuring healthy options on their menus for a “Healthy Taste of Sparta.” This is a Girl Scout Gold Award project developed by Sparta High School senior, Amanda Garger. Each month, March through June, local restaurants will be participating in this program, which is part of a national initiative to increase physical activity and healthy eating. March is low-fat month and Dunkin’ Donuts, TJ’s Pizzeria Café, and Rita’s Ice are featuring low-fat menu choices. In addition, buyers who wear their green Step Up To Health bracelets will receive 10 percent off the designated menu items at Dunkin’ Donuts and 15 percent off the designated items at TJ’s Pizzeria Café. A Step Up To Health bracelet can be obtained by ordering a healthy choice menu item at participating restaurants. Sparta restaurants and eateries interested in participating in a “Healthy Taste of Sparta” should contact Amanda Garger at amandagarger@yahoo.com. There is no cost to participate. Check the Step Up To Health Web site at www.spartasuth.com for the addition of more restaurants.
