Slide show features historic cemeteries
Vernon’s Historical Cemeteries will be the feature slide presentation and discussion on July 17 at the Vernon Township Senior Citizens Center at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Vernon Township Historical Society and is free and open to the public. Society historian Ronald Dupont Jr. will speak on the numerous historic cemeteries in the township and about the notable individuals interred there. There will also be a display on the cemeteries the society has restored over the past two years, including the DeKay Cemetery, the final resting place for the township’s first settlers. Four generations of DeKay family descendants came to Vernon Township from around the country to a rededication of the cemetery after the society restored it in 2007. Later this summer, the society will erect a historic marker at the DeKay Cemetery site. Refreshments will be served after the July 17 talk. For information, call the society at 973-764-8554.
