Town schedules 5K run/walk
Ogdensburg The Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation commission will hold its second running of the O’burg 5K run/Walk on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 9 a.m. The course is the same certified rolling course as last year, which starts on Route 517 in front of the fire house and will finish behind the fire house. The Fun Run is a half mile long course with the same starting and finish lines as the 5K and will start at 8:30 a.m. Children under 7 may run with an adult. People are encouraged to push strollers and wheelchairs/hand cycles users may self-drive or be pushed in the 5K, so that young children and disabled family members can participate and enjoy the event. The O’burg 5K is a USATF-NJ Grand Prix event and DJ Sebastian Monte will again participate. The scoring this year will be provided by BEST Racing Systems and there will be trophies for the top three finishers and awards for five age brackets. This year, Ogdensburg Day, celebrating the town’s 95th anniversary, will follow immediately after the race. The festivities will start with a parade through town to the fire house area. This year’s proceeds will go toward restoration of Heater’s Pond (Ogdnesburg Memorial Park) which is a borough memorial/recreation park and an environmental area. The Ogdensburg Memorial Park was a six year project started in 1948. Sarah Madden and the NJ Zinc Company donated land around the pond which the borough already owned. Mayor Oakley Richards and Jack Hendershot guided the project. Raymond Beierle designed the bath house and had underground electrical and telephone wires installed. He also provided ecological landscaping. The Fire Department erected the pavilion. The park was officially dedicated with a bronzed plaque at the base of the flag pole to honor war heroes during the summer of 1954, as was Madden’s wish.
