in NJPAC “Sweeney Todd” production Newark — Monica Ban has been in theatre since she was 13 years old. The West Milford native graduated from DePaul Catholic and now attends Montclair State University as a musical theatre major. Starting tonight, she is part of Stephen Sondheim’s masterfully macabre musical thriller, Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, at the NJPAC Victoria Theater. This production is from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Summer Musical Program and the acclaimed New Jersey Youth Theatre. The actors are between the ages of 18 and 22. For Ban, it is a thrill to work with this company and to perform on at the beautiful NJPAC theatre. “This is a great show and an interesting production,” said Ban. “We are miming a lot and not using many props.” Ban has played Irma in “Anything Goes,” Jenn in “Grease,” and was in Montclair’s “Crazy for You” production as well. “We’ve worked for months on this show and it would be great for people to come and see it,” she said. Sweeney Todd tells the suspenseful, razor-sharp story of Benjamin Barker (alias Sweeney Todd), who returns to the grimy streets of 19th-century London after years of false imprisonment, then vows to extract a bloody revenge by setting up a new barber shop with the help of Mrs. Lovett - a widowed and quite demented baker who turns Todd’s victims into the tastiest meat pies in all of London. This Tony-winning classic has captivated audiences on both Broadway and the big screen - and now it makes its debut appearance at NJPAC. The show is this Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 22 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 23, 24, and 25 at 7:30 and Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from $25-$35.
