The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said Franklin Police Sgt. William Grissom was the officer involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash May 27.

Deanna D’Arco, 19, of Sussex died of injuries from the collision two days later at Morristown Medical Center.

According to the preliminary investigation, Grissom, who was on duty and operating a marked police vehicle, was involved in a collision with another vehicle near the intersection of Route 23 and Walsh Street in Franklin about 10:40 a.m. May 27, the attorney general’s office said.

D’Arco, a passenger in the other vehicle, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment. Grissom and the other driver were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity.
