Dr. Donald A. Sugar, MD

Dr. Donald A. Sugar, MD, of Franklin, N.J., general surgeon, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Newton Medical Center, Newton, N.J.

Donald was born in Passaic, N.J., on Aug. 20, 1935, to Andrew Edward and Alva Linnea (Thulin) Sugar.

Donald graduated from Columbia University and New York Medical College; he began his long career in medicine with his residency at the New Britain General Hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Sugar was in private practice servicing the Franklin area from 1969 to the present. He also served as Chief of Staff and Surgery at Franklin Hospital and Sussex Hospital and was associated with Saint Clare’s Hospitals in Denville and Dover.

Donald served in the U.S. Army as a Captain during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Holy Counselor Lutheran Church in Vernon. Donald also enjoyed skiing, photography, bird watching, and was an avid traveler who enjoyed nature.

Donald was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Ingra (Fischer) Sugar; and sister, Audrey Mooney.

Donald is survived by his loving wife, Maria Victoria (Gonzalez) Sugar; his children, Dinnea Freestone and her husband, Matthew, Dr. Donald A. Sugar Jr. and his wife, Susan, Dr. Julie Sugar-Rosa and her husband, Luis Rosa, and Andrew Sugar and his wife, Jennifer Munsie; and his step-children, Maria T. Edelstein and her husband, Richard, Steve Urrea and his wife, Kelly, Felicia Pauling and William Pauling; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Alva Debiak and her husband, Dennis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

All services are private and under the direction of F. John Ramsey Funeral Franklin. F
