John James O’Brien, 89, died on Thursday June 2, 2016, at his daughter’s home in Highland Lakes. John was born in Paterson, N.J., on March 21, 1927, to the late John and Margie (nee Condon) O’Brien. John had been a resident of Wayne for 54 years before moving to Highland Lakes.
John served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University and received his degree in accounting. John was an insurance salesman for many agencies’s thoughout the Bergen, Passaic and Essex county areas. He was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church in Wayne, N.J. John was an avid Mets fan and golfer.
John was predeceased by his wife Frances Daly O’Brien in 2000, and his son, James O’Brien in 1990, and his brother-in-law, Earl Day in 2014.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Potosnak and her husband Joseph of Highland Lakes, and his three grandchildren, Jennifer Harris and her husband Ryan, John Potosnak and his wife Larissa, and Caitlin Potosnak, and his sister, June Day of Oak Ridge.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home 241 Rt.94, Vernon, NJ (GPS use 1 Vanderhoof Ct) on Tuesday, June 7 from 5-8 p.m. All are invited to attend a mass of Christian Burial Service on Wednesday June 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Our Lady of the Fatima RC Church, Highland Lakes, N.J., interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to Arthritis Foundation.
