Silas J. Matthews, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. Born on Feb. 7, 1923, in Wantage to the late Frank and Hester (Post) Matthews, Mrs. Matthews had been a resident of Sussex County before moving to Telford, Tenn., with his son. He had served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Matthews had worked at the former Agway in Sussex for 22 years before he retired from there in 1967, when he started a lawn maintenance service. He was a member of the Sussex United Methodist Church, The Delaware United Methodist Men’s Club, the American Legion Post No. 213 in Sussex, and the Sussex V.F.W.. He was predeceased by his wife, Frieda H. (Cooper) Matthews in 2001; his two sons, Rev. Silas R. Matthews in 1992 and Dean E. Matthews in 2005.
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Matthews of Telford, Tenn. and his grandchildren. Memorial burial services will be held at a later date in the springtime at Deckertown-Union Cemetery in Wantage.
